Dr Harrison,

 

Long time no see. How've you been? I hope you're well and enjoying your retirement. I'm sorry to suddenly contact you out of the blue, but I'd like to ask a small favour. After being out of academia for a few years, I've decided to go back to university to study a MRes in Astrochemistry with Peter Sarre's group at UoN. As you were my personal tutor for three years, it would mean a lot to me if you could kindly write me an academic reference.

 

As for myself, I'm quite well though I realise I rather miss science. Have been working as a graphic designer for the Evening Post since shortly after graduation, as well as doing some freelance scientific illustration work. It's nice work, but I think it would be slightly foolish not to make good use of my degree, don't you? All was not in vain, however, as the design profession has taught me a great deal about communication and visualisation.

 

Anyway, I hope to hear from you soon. Have tried calling a couple of times, but thus far no luck in getting through.
